Edna Vazquez, Pink Martini’s regular guest singer since 2017, has been delighting fans of our “little orchestra” on legendary stages around the world. But throughout that time, she has also continued to perform and record her own music, a bicultural melting pot of folk, rock, and the music of her Mexican heritage, deeply rooted in universal human emotion.
Now, five years in the making, Edna is proud to announce the release of her first full album of traditional Mexican styles. Te Esperaba (which means “I’ve been waiting for you”) was created and produced entirely by Edna herself, and recorded in Mexico with traditional bands working in three different genres (mariachi, Norteño, and banda). With this triumphant record, Edna has made a true family album, performing mostly originals, alongside some covers of her parents’ favorite traditional songs, and featuring lyrical and performance contributions from her brother and sister.
Thus, it’s no surprise that this is the most deeply emotional and personal music Edna has yet created. “Mexican folk opened the door for me to be a professional musician and has led me to where I am now. This album represents what I came to transcend to this world. My identity, my own culture, her traditions, her limitations, her struggles, her richness, being in another country that accentuates my identity as a Mexican... I “cook” different genres but this special meal is a tribute to my family ancestors.”
